REDUCING OUR IMPACT FOR A BETTER PLANET
AMA protects what matters most, so we’re committed to the planet’s preservation and regeneration. We promote environmental awareness, minimize our footprint and champion climate initiatives for the benefit of Albertans today and in the generations to come.
To celebrate our centennial in 2026, we’ve pledged to plant 100 hectares of forest, rewilding land that has given so much to us and preserving it for the future. Reforestation has a positive impact on air quality, plant and animal life, social and economic growth, health and well-being.
We’ve partnered with the non-profit organization Project Forest to plant thousands of trees that will help capture carbon naturally. We started at Project Forest Camp Creek in 2022, and we’ll plant more forests at other Alberta sites this year.

Jane Flower, Vice-president, Corporate Purpose, AMA“Climate change is not something we can afford to ignore—not as a business, and not as stewards of this planet. We can’t say we’re protecting what matters most to our members if we aren’t fully committed to safeguarding the land we all call home.”
AMA isn’t new to the environmental sustainability space. We hosted our first green initiative in 1972 when we rolled out free emissions-testing for members. And when our Kingsway Centre in Edmonton was built in 2009, it was designed to have minimal impact on the environment as Alberta’s largest geothermal-heated building.
As part of our commitment to climate action and to reinforce our support of Albertans’ mobility choices, we’re installing free electric vehicle charging stations for members at AMA centres across the province.
The first Juice Bars opened in Edmonton, Medicine Hat and Lethbridge at the end of 2022, with other locations to come this year.

Here are some other ways we’re helping Albertans prepare for 2035, when all new cars and passenger trucks sold in Canada must be zero-emission:
• AMA Driver Education is training Alberta’s first generation of EV learners, using two new electric vehicles in Edmonton, with more to come across the province. Students will learn about braking distances and techniques, best practices for charging and more.
• The AMA Roadside Assistance team in Edmonton is piloting emergency EV-charging services, to get stranded EV drivers moving again.
• We’re adding EVs and hybrids to our roadside assistance fleet, to help reduce our own footprint.
• AMA Insurance offers a green discount to hybrid and EV drivers.
• Our EV Life podcast and EV Buyer’s Guide provide impartial guidance for EV owners or those considering a purchase.

Cheryl Dick, Chair, AMA Board of Governors“Since 1926, we’ve been in front of mobility changes so we can help our members explore the world the way they see fit. Supporting EVs is simply the next step—and a very exciting one at that.”

We’re committed to finding environmental solutions that benefit everyone. For example, our most popular member event, Shredding, has already saved the equivalent of 52,000 trees while also protecting personal information. And the more we collect at our annual electronics recycling events, the more we are able to donate to food banks, thanks to a grant from Alberta Recycling.
We know we have to tend to our own garden, too, taking a hard look at ways to reduce AMA’s carbon footprint so we can continue to lead in this space. So, we’re developing extensive workplace initiatives for recycling, waste management, energy efficiency and conservation. And in 2022, we conducted a third-party environmental analysis—then took further action.

The Green Squad is a new committee of passionate employees who volunteered to find more ways to reduce AMA’s climate impact. Committee members commit to a one-year term during which they harvest, investigate, discuss and track ideas from staff—because who better to help us identify these opportunities?
The Green Squad has promoted small changes, such as switching to two-sided printing and closing blinds at the end of every day to conserve energy. They’re also considering bigger ideas like installing solar panels on AMA buildings or changing all light bulbs to LEDs.
